Spend Controls — stop a runaway agent before it becomes a financial incident

An autonomous payment agent without hard spend limits can exhaust budgets, breach cardholder authorisation scopes, and create chargeback exposure before any human sees what's happening. Configure the guardrails before the first agent touches a live processor.

Why this matters

The specific outcomes this tool produces — and the problems it prevents.

Hard limits enforced before execution, not checked after

Per-transaction and rolling daily/monthly caps enforced atomically via DynamoDB conditional writes before the payment API call is made. A spend limit that can be exceeded at the moment of execution isn't a limit — it's a log entry.

Human authorisation enforced in code, not in policy

Transactions above threshold require human approval before the agent can proceed. PCI DSS segregation of duties, enforced at the code level — not as a process that relies on someone reading a log.

Freeze the agent before it breaches — not after

Define the conditions that automatically suspend an agent — spend velocity, circuit breaker state, error rate spike. A freeze trigger at 90% of the limit is more useful than one that fires when the limit is already exceeded.

The right people paged through the right channel

Route spend alerts to SNS, PagerDuty, or Slack with configurable severity thresholds per channel. An alert that reaches the wrong team or the wrong channel is the same as no alert.

How it works

Structured inputs. Immediate output. No setup, no waiting, no consultant required.

1

Select agent types

Choose which payment agents need spend controls — Authoriser, Refund, Payout, or all types. Each agent type can have independent limits.

2

Set transaction and rolling limits

Define per-transaction maximum values and daily/monthly rolling caps. Limits are enforced atomically — concurrent agent executions cannot collectively exceed scope.

3

Configure approval workflows

Set the spend threshold above which human approval is required. Define the approver role and the wait state behaviour — hold, timeout, or escalate.

4

Define freeze triggers

Specify the conditions that automatically suspend the agent — spend velocity, error rate, circuit breaker open state. Set the trigger threshold before the limit, not at it.

5

Export your spend control policy

Download as JSON policy or Terraform HCL with a DynamoDB spend tracker module ready to deploy into your payment infrastructure.
