Idempotency & Safety Rails — prevent the duplicate charge before it happens

A single network timeout between your Lambda and your payment processor, with no idempotency key design, produces two charges. That's a refund, a customer complaint, potential chargeback exposure, and a PCI incident. Design idempotency into your payment flows before you go live — not as a post-incident remediation.

Why this matters

The specific outcomes this tool produces — and the problems it prevents.

Idempotency keys that survive every failure mode

Key composition patterns that survive Lambda cold starts, Step Functions execution resumptions, and processor retries — not just happy-path requests. A timestamp-based key fails the moment an agent retries from a new execution context.

Circuit breakers that stop cascading failures before they become incidents

Open/closed/half-open state machines configured with the right failure thresholds and recovery probes for payment workloads. A circuit breaker that opens too late has already passed the failure to your processor relationship.

Retry policies that don't amplify the problem they're trying to solve

Exponential backoff with decorrelated jitter means retries don't synchronise into a thundering herd that causes the same downstream failure at higher volume. Without jitter, a retry storm is worse than the original fault.

No gap between configuration design and what runs in production

Export YAML or JSON ready for direct deployment in Lambda handlers, Step Functions state machines, or API Gateway integrations. The design and the production configuration are the same document.

How it works

Structured inputs. Immediate output. No setup, no waiting, no consultant required.

1

Select your payment action types

Choose the operations that need idempotency protection — create payment, refund, payout, or webhook. Each action type gets its own key strategy.

2

Design your idempotency key strategy

Define key composition, storage backend (DynamoDB), and TTL for each action type. Verify the key is deterministically derivable from task context, not execution-time state.

3

Configure circuit breakers

Set failure thresholds, timeout windows, and half-open recovery behaviour per downstream dependency — processor API, database, secrets manager.

4

Build retry policies

Set base delay, maximum attempts, backoff multiplier, and jitter strategy. Model the retry behaviour under concurrent failure to verify it doesn't create a thundering herd.

5

Export your configuration

Download as YAML or JSON ready for production deployment. Includes DynamoDB schema for the idempotency key store.
